SANDY

I will make it short, we have been hit by Sandy and it has been bad. Most of our neighbors, including ourselves, have had no power since Monday and we are permanently on the go to find a warm spot, warm food and /or internet access or outlets to power the phones.  The food in the fridge needed to be thrown away, the freezer still has some stuff I hope to safe. Hard to say, since there is basically no information when power will be reestablished in the neighborhood. Some rumors talk of the weekend, lets hope the truth lays somewhere before that!

A huge tree has hit our garage and parts of the roof where our addition to the house is located. We have been in touch with every possible place to get help to remove the tree, getting the insurance involved and now we have to wait and see how fast we can get back to normal.

But my heart goes out to those, who have lost so much more: Their homes, livelihoods and lives. It is scary to be exposed to the fierce powers of nature and to be so utterly helpless in the face of it. May we all be able to soon re-build and be safe.
Again.

  1. Hello Victoria:
We are so distressed to hear of your terrible ordeal and to think of you without somewhere warm to be in your own home. The damage from the tree looks awful but one can only imagine how much worse that could have been. Clearly, the force of the storm must have been immense. How incredibly frightening this all must have been.

We do so hope that things may be returned to normal for you soon, although the scale of the damage makes this an enormous task for those involved. At least you are all safe and well and for that we are thankful and relieved.

May the love that is in our hearts for you and your family comfort you through these dark days. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and to all of those who are still in distress.

  2. My dear Victoria, I've been listening to the news and prayinng for all of you who are facing the drestruction caused by the forces of nature. I've got a few of my friends who live in New York and they also emailed me to say that they had no electricity at the moment. My heart goes out to you. The author, O. Henry, once remarked that "We made the climate. But the weather is something that thurst upon us". He's absolutely right. I hope you will keep safe and also I hope everyone will keep an eye on each other in the neighbourhood in the time of needs. My thoughts and prayers are with you and may god bless you and keep you safe and sound. Please keep us updated with the news. ASD

  4. Thank you all, will try to update in the next few days! Thanks to a large bookstore nearby with coffee and online service we are able to stay connected for a moment. It is awful and shocking to see the destruction elsewhere, so near, in Manhattan and New
Jersey and Breezy Point! People lost everything. It is impossible to get a true sense of the damages....

  7. Hello Victoria

I had been thinking of you and praying you were safe. I am so sorry you had this damage and that you suffer from loss of power, which makes one absolutely helpless. I will hope for restoration and a resumption of normalcy soon.

  9. Clean up work has started this morning, we are grateful for the help, hopefully power will also be restored soon. Amazing, how much we miss suddenly, we are indeed tremendously dependent on electricity. And we do not have a gas stove, so there is nothing, no heat, warm water or cooking. But we do sit around the fireplace at night, burning with a crackling log fire and read, tell stories and play piano by candle light....The kids have blanket piled high and we feel like we just slipped between the pages of a Austen novel. The Dashwood sisters cuddled up like we do now....
Yes, and we are safe and grateful for the storm has passed. And for your kind thoughts and words of support!

  10. Victoria,
I cannot imagine the last few days... as I have sat watching from the other side of the world... it is most unbelievable the devastation in such a short time... I am so happy that you and your family are safe and that the clean-up has started... A nightmare I am sure you wish to wake up from... but know that you, your family and friends affected by 'Sandy' are all in our thoughts... xv

  11. Thank you so much, Vicky. We keep going, now the secondary problems surface. Internet is limited in public places to 1/2 per customer, gasoline is hardly available, and the lines are literally miles long. Streets are blocked for that reason and the police have more then there hands full to manage the crowds every where to get to all kinds of places, many intersections have no lights....Traffic is horrendous. And there is still no power. People are getting slowly impatient. Reality hits now everywhere. I wish I could do something, but the only thing is to hang in there and use as little energy as possible.
We walk a lot now, it makes more sense. Half of our neighborhood has moved away to friends, family or hotels. It's a little strange at night. The sky is dark and we can see the almost full moon and stars. Which is rather beautiful. : )
