Being featured in the Spanish edition of AD January 2011, Gustavo Martinez and Mark Madden, the team of GM Decor shows a wonderful home, loaded to the brim with style and an ever changing inventory...

"It's a typical New York pre-war apartment from 1924 on the edge of Central Park, but for Gustavo and Mark, of GM Decor, it's the expression of their personal and professional trajectory. "It's not just a Pied-a'-terre", says Gustavo."It's our office and gallery for our furniture." Of their original layout, a few things have changed. They've opened up the rooms to take advantage of the heigh ceilings; eliminated some doors and replaced others with French doors to create a classic platform so the home could go through endless reincarnations. "It has an incredible capacity for reinterpretation and adjusts to our life changes", say the owners. The pure white walls, ceilings and moldings contrast with dark stained floors to give the apartment a gallery - like atmosphere; an ideal stage where they can show their exclusive and ever changing collection of antique furniture and the paintings and photographs of emerging artists which is updated every three month. "This way we change the theme and the look but try to maintain the character and classic canvas of the apartment", says Martinez. "Our collection of furniture and objects started to grow as we traveled around the world. In particular, we dove into the Modernism Movement universe with the jewels and design from the 40s, 50s and 60s. That was how our gallery specializing in the period was born". More then a house, the home of Gustavo and Mark is a "laboratory of ideas", they say, where their prototypes live freely and where the path of their passions cross; to travel and to buy furniture with their profession as designers and antique dealers."

It sounds like a dream come true to me!

Tickled pink?

Yesterday color authority Pantone announced it's color of the year 2011 to be an immense pink called "honeysuckle". The company predicts that we will see a lot of this color, appearing on everything from dresses to pillows, nail polish, sofas and appliances.

A sherbety shade of pink, with a hint of red and orange zest, honeysuckle is seen by designers as a pick -me-up at a time when many people have had their fill of misfortune.

Interestingly enough many people do not necessarily associate honeysuckle with the color pink. The bush which grows on the corner of my deck blooms in a lovely shade of yellow....Apparently people associate the color with what they know from their childhood....Perhaps the honeysuckle you knew then was pink?

Pink has been on the radar of many designers for a couple of years now and I guess the announcement to make it the color of the year 2011 culminates in it's final arrival at the mainstream households. I still remember the pink polo shirts I gave my husband and son two years ago and seeing my then 8 year old son being a little taken aback at first. Girly pink for him? But he eventually wore the shirt for many month and does now not object to pink in his wardrobe any more then to navy blue!

I love pink as much as many other colors, my house is filled with reds and green, turquoise and blues and surely it will find it's way into it as accent on plates, pillows and outfits.
It's a summer color, reminding me of raspberries, little girl's dresses and lemonade.

There is a sense of care free life when looking at pink. I am sure it made it's way into our current fashion for those reasons as well.

To see on the bright side, away from worries and unemployment which must surely show itself in dull browns and muddy grays...
It's a good thing to celebrate life when the going is tough and to surround ourselves with an uplifting shade of pink is a wonderful way of maintaining optimism and a youthful spirit.
My dish washing will be stylish at last!!!

New kid on the blog

Rue magazine has made the rounds among the blogger community and after looking through the first issue I have to say it's going to be there to stay for hopefully a long time. It's stylish, competent, informative and fun to look at.
I found lots of interesting stuff to read and lovely homes and rooms to look at.
Check out my selection of favorites...After coming back this year from Europe I still love all the bright walls, the colorful accents,
the somewhat informal, yet elegant feeling in these rooms below.


In Julia Edelman's (Buckingham Interiors) wonderful home I found many pretty and elegant vistas. Here an oversized hook holds an enormous Spanish influenced chandelier, the room benefits from high ceilings and marries whimsical, modern and traditional furniture.


I love this living room, light filled with great pieces, casual and very nicely selected mid-century furniture, all connected through the unifying color scheme. It belongs to fellow blogger Victoria Smith of sfgirlbybay.

A corner of her bedroom, a simple country room feel, with a modern touch. Love the side table, the bed linens and of course the turquoise accents.

Life as art! Mary Douglas Drysdale designed the living quarters for Sam Gilliam, the artist and his wife. I adore the sophisticated artwork and the simplicity of this dining room arrangement. The house is an truly artist's dream. Go, see for yourself!
